The Cleveland Browns' newest extended defensive back had quite the moment during Cleveland's first practice of the season on Wednesday.
Grant Delpit was sitting out of practice as he was waiting for his contract extension to get done. As a player who is in a contract negotiation, they simply cannot risk injury, especially on the first day of training camp. Those types of injuries are rare, but it happened today down in Cincinnati, and it happened in Cleveland last year with Martin Emerson Jr.
Thankfully, Delpit didn't have to wait all that long, as in the middle of individual drills, Browns general manager Andrew Berry came up to Delpit, tapped him on the back, and let him know that his extension in Cleveland was finalized. He worked his way back to the rest of the safety group, and they welcomed him back with a group dance.
Delpit went, got his helmet, and jumped right in.
It was an awesome moment and one that really stands out as a very cool, real-life scenario for a player that should be a fan favorite in Cleveland.
Delpit's extension marks the second premier player this week that Cleveland has inked to yet another wealthy extension. Earlier in the week, Cleveland signed the hometown kid, Denzel Ward, to the biggest contract in NFL history for a cornerback.
In what has been an interesting offseason for Cleveland, where they moved off of their superstar Myles Garrett, but they have hung onto two very good players on the backend of the defense is good to see.
These two moves signal two things. The first is that the market for these two players was not rich enough to move off. I promise, if a team came knocking with a first or second round pick for either of these two, they would complete that trade in seconds. It is clear that the offers that they have received have not been that high.
The second is that Cleveland believes that they are just a quarterback away. Maybe they have that guy on their roster, and if they do, amazing! If they don't, they believe that if they get one of the top players in next year's draft, he will be able to pop right in and join a team that is ready to win.
It is really cool to see the Browns rewarding two of their most loyal players over the last five years. Denzel Ward remains a Brown, and hopefully, he finishes his career here. Grant Delpit is hoping the same thing, and it was really cool to see, in real time, him get word that his deal was finalized.
