Washington saw its flickering NCAA Tournament hopes fully extinguished with a dispiriting home less to Penn St this week. What once looked like a drive to the finish now looks frighteningly like the Dawgs having to play out the string against the fellow Big 10 bottom-dwellers. The Huskies welcome one of those bottom-dwellers to Alaska Airlines Arena on Saturday evening when the Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-13, 4-9) come to Seattle.
The Gophers are led by big, versatile guard Cade Tyson. The 6’7” averages over 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting 49% overall and 39% from three. He has a bizarre shooting split with 45% from outside at home and 18% on the road (but many more games and attempts at home pulling up the average). The Gopher offense focuses on ball movement, with four players averaging between 2.4-4.5 assists per game and another four with more than 4 3PA per game. First-year HC Niko Medved has shown improvement, but the formula has not translated into many wins in conference. After early wins against Iowa and Indiana, the Gophers have lost eight of their last nine, although the one win was over a top-10 Michigan St team.
Overall, the Gophers have been poor away from home, only beating Northwestern outside of Williams Arena. Does that show a unique talent against purple teams, or can the Dawgs bounce back from the Penn St game? The game will tip off at 6:00 PM PT and will air on NBC Sports/Peacock.
Go Dawgs!
