A 7-0 win for the Washington Huskies over Loyola Chicago marks 17 straight victories for coach Heather Tarr.
On Tuesday, the Huskies were fueled by a gem from senior Sophia Ramuno, who surrendered just 3 hits and 2 walks with a season-high 12 strikeouts to improve to 7-2 on the season before she was relieved by Rylee Rehbein, who worked a perfect seventh inning to extend Washington's winning streak.
It took a late surge for the Huskies to break through against the Ramblers' Brooke Steinhorst, when third baseman Giselle Alvarez broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a solo home run, her first of two on the day. The junior finished 3-for-4 with a pair of solo blasts on the day, as she and freshman Kaycie Burdick led Washington's offense.
Burdick has been an on-base machine all season long, but has taken it to another level since being moved to the leadoff spot. She went 3-for-5 on Tuesday with 5 runs batted in, four of which came on her first career home run, a sixth-inning grand slam, to help propel the Huskies to the win.
Steinhorst dropped to 2-6 on the season after lasting 5 2/3 innings and letting up 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks with a strikeout.
Now, the Huskies will have a few days off before they hit the road again for a three-game series with the Iowa Hawkeyes, which is set to begin on Friday, March 27, at 4:00 p.m. PT.
