Coach Heather Tarr has a very promising young roster to build around for the foreseeable future after two members of the Washington Huskies were named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team.
The first was center fielder Kaycie Burdick, who didn't take long to establish herself as a key piece of the lineup upon her arrival. After a few weeks of getting on base at a high clip, her .457 on-base percentage ranks No. 4 on the team for the year; Tarr moved her into the leadoff spot, where she thrived.
Burdick finished the year with a .375 batting average, the second-best mark on the team behind only Giselle Alvarez, 37 runs scored, which was also good for No. 2 behind just Alexis DeBoer, along with 57 hits, 30 runs batted in, 2 home runs, and 20 walks.
She also put together a perfect defensive season with no errors on her 59 chances, tallying 57 putouts and 2 outfield assists while becoming one of the staples of the lineup, playing in 52 games.
Shortstop Melody Acevedo also found her name on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team after a strong season at the plate. Her .353 batting average was good for No. 4 on the Huskies, while she added a .935 OPS, 3 home runs, 23 RBIs, 41 hits, and 17 walks across 44 appearances.
For Acevedo, the next step in her development will come on the defensive side. Across 132 chances, the third-most on the team, she committed 14 errors for an .894 fielding percentage.
The two freshmen round out six postseason honors for the Huskies. Alvarez and DeBoer were both named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while pitcher Morgan Reimer found herself on the Second Team, and catcher Tia Durst was Washington's representative on the All-Big Ten Sportsmanship Team.
