As coach Danny Sprinkle looks to retool the Washington Huskies through the transfer portal ahead of his third season on Montlake, he may not need to go very far to add some depth to his frontcourt.
On Saturday morning, Seattle University center Austin Maurer announced his intentions to enter the portal after a solid season with the Redhawks. While playing just 18 minutes per game, the 7-footer who is originally from Medford, Oregon, and transferred to Seattle U after a year at Grand Canyon University, averaged 7.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.
Maurer started the Redhawks' final 25 contests and had one of the best games of his career against the Huskies in a 70-66 win over Sprinkle's squad inside Climate Pledge Arena in December. He posted a career-high 19 points and added 5 rebounds and 3 blocks while displaying impressive physicality in the middle of the floor, as even projected lottery pick Hannes Steinbach struggled down low, shooting 5-for-13 from the floor in the game.
"It felt like a Big Ten game," Sprinkle said after the game in December. "Our guys have got to be able to play through it better; they just do, and credit Seattle U, they were the aggressors. They were physical, I thought defensively for the most part, they were always in the right position, and they made us make plays and score over them, and we just didn't do that."
Maurer was a big reason for that, as his length, strength, and sturdiness in the middle of the floor helped hold the Huskies to a 36.9 shooting percentage on the day. As Sprinkle looks to add the length and physicality necessary to compete in the Big Ten, Maurer could wind up as an effective piece on Montlake if he were to wind up with the Huskies alongside Mady Traore, Nikola Dzepina, and Franck Kepnang if he's granted another year of eligibility.
The transfer portal doesn't officially open until April 7, but the Huskies have already seen a trio of players enter in guards JJ Mandaquit, Courtland Muldrew, and Zoom Diallo.
