The Washington Huskies' first loss to the transfer portal was a big one, when it was reported on Monday that freshman guard Courtland Muldrew will be searching for a new home.

The former four-star recruit from Har Ber High School in Springdale, Arkansas, got off to a slow start early on in his career, but as injuries mounted for coach Danny Sprinkle's squad, he played a critical role down the stretch. He played 17-plus minutes in seven of Washington's final eight games, and really came into his own at both ends of the floor, proving himself to be a reliable bench scorer who can bring a major spark on the defensive end.

Sprinkle would consistently praise Muldrew for his energy on the defensive end, calling him a "wild banshee" at times, because of his effort and mentality, with the willingness to guard anybody on the floor at any time. However, he was a bit buried in the rotation early on in the year as Sprinkle had to figure out how to balance a deep freshman class with several high-end transfer portal acquisitions.

Be that as it may, Sprinkle still admitted later in the year that he should have given Muldrew, who finished the season averaging 3.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, more minutes.

"Probably bad coaching on my part," the head coach said in early March of Muldrew's late-season breakout.

"I should have been playing him over a lot of people earlier.
I really should, his energy's contagious. Even when he screws up, he's flying around. He makes stuff happen.
And we need that, this team, we need that spark."

Muldrew was expected to be a building block in the rotation for Sprinkle's program heading into his third season, but now the Huskies will most likely need to turn to the portal to turn to the portal to add an additional piece in the backcourt.
