Brian Mitchell is thinking good thoughts for Terry McLaurin in 2026.
Mitchell was good enough to play 14 years in the NFL, 10 of which were with the Washington Redskins, who drafted him in 1990. Mitchell was a running back who had actually played quarterback in college at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (The Ragin' Cajuns).
Well, Mitchell, now a co-host with J.P. Finlay on 106.7 The Fan's "BMitch & Finlay," said something on Wednesday that grabbed my attention, regarding Terry McLaurin, the Commanders' top receiver. New offensive coordinator David Blough, on Monday before OTAs, when talking with the media, mentioned, "We may move him (McLaurin) around a little bit more. We will do the things he does well to try to put us in advantageous positions. He's done an excellent job so far of handling what we've thrown at him."
Finlay mentioned he would like Blough this season to move McLaurin around and put him in motion, move him around on the field." Mitchell then responded, "Moving him around gives people a different look. They are so accustomed to seeing him in that one position, to where I guarantee you, every team's approach was damn-near similar. Now, you don't know where he's going to be. You have to adjust that."
McLaurin, in Kliff Kingsbury's offense, was mostly lined up on the left side. But do keep in mind that some of that was because the Commanders were in Kingsbury's hurry-up/no-huddle, forcing defenses to remain in the same personnel and alignment.
Mitchell likes thinking about McLaurin lining up in multiple positions on the field, where defensive coordinators won't be able to plan for him as easily. Might Mitchell be on to something? Might Blough? McLaurin certainly seems excited.
