When the Washington Commanders promoted David Blough to offensive coordinator in January, it was a move made to get the most out of superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels was terrific in former coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's offense, but the scheme itself had limited growth potential. In promoting Blough, head coach Dan Quinn wanted an offense that featured Daniels more under center, more play-action, and less as a runner.

Blough's new offense would also create more opportunities for No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin had his best season under Kingsbury in 2024, but dealt with injuries last season. A common knock on Kingsbury is that he doesn't move his outside receivers around the formation pre-snap to create mismatches.

Not under Blough. After his promotion, Blough spoke about the type of offense he would run. One thing, in particular, stood out. Blough said the offense would be built to feature McLaurin.

"These guys, whether they're sparking a long run in the running game with blocking on the perimeter, or creating explosive passes, this thing is going to be built around how do we get Terry 10 targets a game?" Blough said.

After what felt like a lost year due to missing several games with an injury, McLaurin is locked in this offseason. So what does he think about getting 10 targets per game?

"I love that," McLaurin said at an event designed to encourage youth to participate in golf. "You know, he told me that way back in February. He texted me that. Him and I have a really good relationship, and he's been a man of his word. My job is to prove that each and every day, when we're having workouts to be the leader, to be someone who you can count on to be on the field and make plays."

McLaurin said he was definitely smiling when he first saw Blough's message.

The 2026 season will be McLaurin's eighth in the NFL. Blough will be his fifth offensive coordinator. Before Kingsbury's arrival, Washington's two previous OCs, Scott Turner and Eric Bieniemy, didn't do a good job of manufacturing targets for McLaurin. That will not be a concern with Blough.
