Hannes Steinbach has had a historic freshman season for the Washington Huskies.
Across 28 games after coming over from Germany, the 6-foot-11 forward quickly established himself as Danny Sprinkle's best player, while the head coach compared him to Hall of Fame big man Dennis Rodman as a rebounder before the season began. Steinbach more than lived up to the hype, putting together 18.6 points and 11.6 rebounds (which led the Big Ten and ranks No. 2 in the nation) per game while shooting 58.6 percent on the field, adding 1.5 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals per contest.
Those numbers were more than enough to land Steinbach on the all-conference Freshman Team, as well as the All-Big Ten Third Team according to both the coaches and the media, and the Associated Press' All-Big Ten Second Team.
However, those gaudy numbers weren't enough to help him take home Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, which went to Illinois' Keaton Wagler, who averaged 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, despite setting records at both Washington and in the Big Ten.
Not only did Steinbach post a conference record 20 double-doubles, but he did so with authority. He had three games of 20-plus points and 15-plus rebounds, including a 22-point, 24-rebound outburst against the USC Trojans, while picking up four Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards and being honored as the National Freshman of the Week twice.
As the Huskies prepare to face off with the USC Trojans in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, Steinbach, who is projected as a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA draft, could return to Washington for his sophomore year, but has yet to make his decision on what's next in his career.
"I'm just trying to look forward to the next game," Steinbach said on Wednesday following his historic outing in UW's win over USC. "It doesn't really matter if this is my last game (inside Alaska Airlines Arena), I'm just trying to focus on what we have to do as a team to win the game...I just try to focus on doing the best, whatever I do. It doesn't matter what decision I make, but I'm going to make my decision when I'm fully confident in it. It doesn't matter what, it's just going into the next step with full confidence in myself."
