The Washington Commanders publicly praised tight end Zach Ertz on Tuesday.
On X (formerly Twitter), the Commanders' page on Tuesday night revealed a new post made at 6:32 PM. It contains a photo of the Washington veteran tight end with his back to the camera, hands up catching a pass during a home game, wearing the old Washington Redskins uniform, excluding the helmet, of course. The lighting appears darker than on Christmas Day against the Dallas Cowboys. So the photo appears to be from either the Sunday Night Seahawks game or the Sunday Night Broncos game, since the Commanders wore the Super Bowl-era uniform for those three games this season.
Why did the Commanders post this photo of Ertz? Well, the first reason is Zach Selby ran a position review on the 16th of January regarding the tight end position. The Commanders didn't post anything about this on X when the review was written, as they had posted the running backs review back on January 13.
It's possible the Commanders were busy posting regarding stadium plans, stadium photos and simply overlooked Selby's work on the tight position he had posted over at Commanders.com. If that is the case, then the Commanders Public Relations team on X is simply attempting to get caught up with Selby's work at the team's website.
The post, in addition to the photo, also declares that Ertz "moved up to fifth all-time in receptions among tight ends" during the 2025 season. Ertz however was injured badly, in the road game 31-0 loss at the Minnesota Vikings, December 7, tearing the ACL in his right knee.
Is this the Commanders wanting to praise Ertz publicly because they love the guy, love his leadership, but realize they must move on from the 35 year-old tight end who is now recovering from ACL surgery? Ertz was having another fine season with 50 receptions, averaging 10.1 yards per reception, including four touchdown receptions.
Ertz indeed has been a true servant-leader for the Commanders. Even the days after tearing his ACL, Ertz was showing video and teaching young tight end Ben Sinnott some of the finer points he has learned in his lengthy NFL career of 181 games, 825 receptions, 8,592 receiving yards, and 57 touchdown receptions.
Yes, the Commanders are probably paving the way to move on, and they are also sincerely thankful to Ertz for his two seasons with Washington and what all he has done for those younger tight ends learning at his feet. It's been a great run for Ertz, but can Dan Quinn and Adam Peters afford to bring back Ertz who will turn 36 in November, after he tore his ACL in December?
Incidentally, here are the NFL top-five tight ends in career receptions:
