CHICAGO — As Braden Smith continues to pursue the NCAA career assists record, the Purdue men's basketball point guard registered one of his prettiest against Northwestern on Thursday.
Notably, it came on an all-out effort play by the Boilermakers point guard.
With under six minutes to play in a Big Ten Tournament third-round game against Northwestern, Smith knocked away a pass intended for Jake West.
The ball bounced in the air, and Smith dove and smacked it back across the mid-court line and toward the Boilers’ basket as he tumbled out of bounds. Omer Mayer beat teammate Gicarri Harris to the loose ball and laid it in for Smith’s eighth assist of the half.
He added a ninth before the end of the half as Purdue built a 45-21 lead.
As of halftime, Smith stands 38 assists away from breaking former Duke guard Bobby Hurley’s all-time record of 1.076. He has an indeterminate number of games left to worth with – likely at least one more in Chicago this week, based on this first half, and at least one in the NCAA Tournament starting next week.
Northwestern limited Smith in the first half when the teams played in Evanston, Illinois, last week. Smith posted three points, nine assists and two steals with one turnover in Wednesday's first half.
