Warriors have new top target amid chances of signing LeBron James go down originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Not to say that DeMar DeRozan couldn't be a great fit for multiple teams in the NBA, but I think it's very fair to question whether he'd be a perfect fit for teams like the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors, who reportedly have a ton of interest in making a move for superstar LeBron James, will need a backup option. Unfortunately, the Warriors aren't exactly in a great position to add a star player without that player accepting a veteran minimum salary. James and DeRozan could both be those guys.
According to the latest report, depending on what happens with James, there seems to be an expectation that DeRozan could be in the mix.
“I mean he, to me, slots in now as one of the most important dominoes post-LeBron whenever LeBron makes his decision. I think a lot of the league is waiting on that,” Anthony Slater said, H/T Heavy. “But he’s gonna decide to not go to several teams who will still be looking for veteran wing help.
“…The Warriors I’ve already been told, it’s a guy they will look into at some point in the coming days, especially if they do not get LeBron James.”
I wouldn't love DeRozan in the Warriors' system, simply because of his lack of a three-point shot and his tendency to slow the game down a bit.
The Warriors are at their best when they're getting up three-point shots at a high level, running around the court and causing havoc. There's a reason why Golden State has been one of the toughest teams to guard in NBA history, and DeRozan doesn't exactly fit in that mix.
