Wales' Hockey World Cup qualification hopes are over after an agonising 3-2 defeat by Uruguay in Hyderabad, India was followed bu the hosts drawing with Scotland.

Wales made a bright start as Anja Atkin opened the scoring on four minutes.

Manuela Vilar equalised for Uruguay from a penalty corner in the second to tie the scores at the interval.

Agustina Diaz then gave the South Americans the lead with another penalty corner in the third before Teresa Viana doubled their lead.

Rachel Goodwin tapped home from close range in the fourth quarter, after a brilliant run from Betsan Thomas up the right hand side of the pitch, but it proved to just be a consolation goal.

India and Scotland drew 2-2 to ensure Wales cannot overhaul either of them.

With only the top two sides from each group progressing to the semi-final stages of qualifying, Kevin Johnson's side are unable to progress, even if they beat hosts India on Wednesday.

Failure to make the last four sees Johnson's side contest 5th-8th place games on Friday and Saturday.

Scotland only need a draw against Uruguay on Wednesday to progress to the semi-finals of qualifying.

Wales' men's side won their third-place play-off against Poland in Santiago to seal their spot at August's World Cup which will be hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
