The polls are open!

It's time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Athlete of the Week for the week of April 7-12. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.

Last week, Flagler Palm Coast baseball player Carson Flis captured the honors, claiming 41.7% of the votes.

The News-Journal gathers nominees via email from coaches across the area. Coaches can email nominees to [email protected]. To round out the ballot, the News-Journal staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online.

Voting will close at 5 p.m. Saturday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.


Baseball​


Helmut Waters, Mainland: The senior had two hits and an RBI in a win over University. During a rout of Orlando Christian Prep, he drove in a game-high four runs, highlighted by a homer.

Lacrosse​


Dominic King, Flagler Palm Coast: The senior struck for four goals in a 6-3 win over Forest.

Softball​


Baylie Howard, University: Howard recorded two hits, four RBIs and scored three times in a win over Flagler Palm Coast.

Amya Ramos, Taylor: The senior stuffed the box score in victories over Interlachen and Crescent City. In the first contest, Ramos had three hits, including a home run, scored three runs and drove in five. In the second, she homered again, knocking in three runs.

Tennis​


Daniel Faraj, Matanzas: The junior picked up singles victories at Line 3 against Gainesville and Line 2 against Menendez. He also triumphed in No. 2 doubles against both opponents.

Octavio Stout, Spruce Creek: The senior tallied a No. 4 singles victory and a No. 2 doubles win against Geneva.

Track and Field​


Karina Marcelus, Flagler Palm Coast: The junior laid down the fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles at the Five Star Conference meet (14.81 seconds). Marcelus also won the long jump and triple jump with marks of 5.33 and 11.15 meters.

Mackenzie Roy, Spruce Creek: The senior won three races for the first-place Hawks at the Five Star Conference meet. Roy claimed the 800-meter in 2:18.71, the 1,600-meter in 4:55.08 and the 3,200-meter in 10:40.09.

Weightlifting​


Winder Altinor, Atlantic: Altinor hoisted a state title-winning traditional total of 735, headlined by a 420-pound bench press, in the unlimited weight class.

Isaiah McCloud, New Smyrna Beach: McCloud claimed a state championship for the third straight year, triumphing in the 219-pound weight class with a 725 traditional total. He bench pressed 405 pounds.

Armoni Spurlock, New Smyrna Beach: The senior captured a state title at 199 pounds with an Olympic total of 580 (245 snatch, 335 clean and jerk).
