Although high schools are letting out for the summer and beach season set to begin for real this week, we're not quite ready to let go of the 2025-26 high school sports season just yet.
This week, The Providence Journal will begin our Spring All-State photo shoots at our downtown offices and our Spring All-State teams will be published – online an in print – in the coming weeks. And today, we're going to launch a new high school sports poll, piggybacking on our June 18 All-State Awards Show held at The Providence Performing Arts Center, featuring URI wide receiver Marquis Buchanan.
At the show, we gave out Player of the Year awards for each sport. This is where you come in. We'll ask you to select the Longplex Athlete of the Season, for each of the three seasons on the high school sports calendar. Below are the Players of the Year for each of the fall sports. Tell us who you would choose as the Athlete of the Fall Season.
Remember, only votes in the online poll at the end of this article will be accepted. No phone or email votes will be counted.
Her name was known before she had a chance to race for the Clippers, and two years in, Ludwig has become one of the best in school history. Ludwig’s freshman campaign was beyond impressive, as she finished third at the state meet, and she left little doubt about her talent this fall. The sophomore won gold this fall with a time of 18:17.27, more than 27 seconds faster than anyone else, and then went on to finish fifth at New Englands. It’s hard to imagine what she’ll do the next two years but it will be fun to watch.
What did Gray to do earn his third straight First Team All-State spot? Just have one of the best seasons in the history of the state. The Patriots’ senior dominated this fall, running away with the Class B Meet and closing strong to win his first State Championship. He continued running strong, taking down the New England Championship, then won the Nike Cross Regionals Northeast before finishing 15th at the Nike Cross Nations. Gray will run this winter and spring, then continue competing at the University of Virginia next fall.
Stilley started her career as a First Team All Stater and closes it the same way. A three-time First Team selection – an injury prevented a fourth – Stilley played defense with a speed and intensity unlike anyone else in the state, taking away the opposition’s best offensive threat and getting the ball upfield to her teammates in a hurry. Stilley’s playing career will continue next fall at the Division I level at the University of New Hampshire.
Jackson made a significant leap in his game and was a two-way asset for the Hawks. The junior was one of the state’s elite offensive talents, but there wasn’t a better cover cornerback in the state. Hendricken often put Jackson, a First Teamer at the position last year, out on an island and he performed every week. Jackson will be one of Rhode Island’s top talents again during his senior season after a transfer to rival La Salle.
The best-two way player in the state, seidi earned about every accolade possible this fall, including his second straight appearance as a first team all-stater. Seidi was a beast in the hawks’ ground game and he ran for more than 1,100 yards this season and scored 10 touchdowns. He closed his career with 160-plus yards rushing and the lone offensive touchdown in hendricken’s super bowl win over la salle. Seidi will play for army next fall.
The skippers reached a fourth state final in five years partly thanks to the danger barajas offered up front. She cracked the 30-goal mark thanks to a magical left foot and a natural strength that seems beyond her years. Barajas is a member of the u.s. youth national team pool and a united soccer coaches all-american – her potential seems to have no limits going forward.
Mefford’s production in his high school finale was even more impressive considering the multiple injuries he battled. He was an all-american selection by the united soccer coaches, scored more than 20 times and pushed 10 assists for the most dangerous attack in division i. The hawks were the top team in the league during the regular season after capturing a state championship in 2024.
Garrepy has been a regular appointment to the journal’s all-state teams since her freshman year. The skippers star moved from middle to the outside and was unstoppable as north kingstown ran to its fourth straight girls volleyball championship. Garrepy was one of the older players on the youthful skippers and her leadership paid off in the state championship against east providence. Garrepy managed 261 kills and 31 blocks this past season.
It was a historic season for oganesian, who dominated all season and put on a show at the state singles tournament to make her debut as a first team all stater. Oganesian became a full-time raider this fall and breezed through the d-iii season. At the state tourney, she cruised through each round before beating south kingstown’s two-time champ alexa clark, becoming the first pawtucket girl to win the state singles title. You can expect another crown in 2026.
