No. 23 Tennessee (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will play Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl.
The Music City Bowl will be contested Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff between the Vols and Fighting Illini is slated for 5:30 p.m. EST. ESPN will televise the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Mike Neu is in his first season as Illinois' senior offensive assistant. He has ties to Nashville and the Vols' football program.
Neu served as quarterbacks coach for the Nashville Kats of the Arena Football League in 1998. He was named offensive coordinator for Nashville in 1999. During his tenure with the Kats, Neu coached former Tennessee quarterback Andy Kelly and former Vols' wide receiver Cory Fleming.
In 1999 under Neu, Kelly totaled 3,609 passing yards and 67 touchdowns. Fleming recorded 111 receptions for 1,227 yards and 31 touchdowns.
During his playing career, Neu was quarterback for Nashville and Orlando in the Arena Football League. He also played for Calgary in the Canadian Football League.
Neu began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ball State in 1994 before his tenure with the Kats. He was also head coach of the Augusta Stallions (2000). Neu served as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Cobras in 2001. He was also the team's head coach from 2001-02. Neu served as head coach of the New Orleans VooDoo from 2004-08.
He was named quarterbacks coach at Tulane from 2012-13 before taking the same position with New Orleans in the NFL. Neu coached the Saints from 2014-15 before becoming head coach at Ball State (2016-24).
On Sept. 1, 2022, Tennessee defeated Ball State, 59-10, at Neyland Stadium in a season opener for both schools.
