For the second time in 12 months, former Washington Redskin and Commander, Jonathan Allen, will be released.
On Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the Vikings are expected to release the veteran defensive tackle because they are over the 2026 salary cap. Simply put, they have to cut some players who make big money and sign others willing to come to Minnesota for less.
So now, Jonathan Allen is looking for a new team, his third team in the NFL. The Vikings' job did not last nearly as long as Allen had hoped, having signed a three-year, $51 million deal in free agency last offseason.
What is the next stop for the former Alabama Crimson Tide stud defensive tackle? First, according to reports, Allen was guaranteed $25M, so he will collect what, if any, of that is still owed to him.
Secondly, what type of demand will there be for Allen? His Vikings contract was three years, averaging $17 million per season. Allen started all 17 games in his one year with Minnesota and had 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks. So, many teams will be interested in signing Allen, but what will he bring to the market at this value? There is no word yet on whether the Vikings asked Allen to agree to a restructured deal.
Would Allen go to one of the NFC East Rivals (Eagles, Cowboys, Giants)? At a lower priced tag, would Allen return to the Commanders? The Commanders announced the signing of DT Shy Tuttle on Wednesday, and they already have defensive tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw under contract for 2026. Consequently, Allen will most likely get better deals from other teams than his hometown team. Keep in mind that the current administration of Adam Peters and Dan Quinn is determined to release Allen during the 2025 offseason.
Allen played at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, VA. Allen was a high school stud, a 5-Star recruit, and in 2012, the Gatorade Player of the year. He signed with Alabama, increasing in his production each season, resulting in Allen being the 17th overall selection by the Washington Redskins in the 2017 NFL Draft.
It's also fair to ask how much Allen has left? We'll see soon once the Vikings officially move on from him.

The former Pro Bowler had 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 17 starts. The Vikings are $40-plus million over the cap and need to get under, thus the move. pic.twitter.com/kz2W6alkaM
