The Minnesota Vikings just went through the NFL Draft without a general manager. Their former GM, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, rejoined the San Francisco 49ers in late February.
The 49ers are no strangers to having members from their front office interviewed or outright poached. We’re talking about one of the most successful franchises this decade. In a copycat league, other teams will do what they can to pick the brains of the powers that be.
Adofo-Mensah was the first to leave. Since then, Martin Mayhew, Ran Carthon, and Adam Peters have all left to become general managers elsewhere.
At the end of the regular season, the Miami Dolphins requested interviews for three of the 49ers’ front office members: Josh Williams, Tariq Ahmad, and RJ Gillen. On Thursday morning, the Vikings requested an interview with Gillen, the 49ers’ assistant general manager, for their vacant general manager position.
Gillen has been with the 49ers for over a decade. This past season was his first as assistant general manager. He spent the previous two seasons as director of player personnel and three seasons before as director of pro personnel. He’s been in the scouting department since 2015. That kind of experience should bode well for Gillen in any potential interviews.
