Kevin O'Connell told reporters Tuesday that the Minnesota Vikings will continue their quarterback competition into training camp. He said he has a date in mind for when he wants a decision, but didn't share exactly when that is with reporters.

The decision carries a lot of weight not just for Minnesota, but for the rest of the division. Only two games separated the first-place Bears (11-6) and the Vikings and Lions, who each finished 9-8 last season. What could Minnesota be capable of if they get just average production from its starting quarterback in 2026?

That's why Moe Moton of Bleacher Report listed the Vikings' quarterback competition as the biggest decision in the entire NFC North as training camp begins.

The Athletic's Alec Lewis reported that head coach Kevin O'Connell doesn't expect to extend this battle "until the end of training camp."

However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believes Murray and McCarthy will battle "right up to the start of the season."

Based on comments and thoughts from local beat reporters, Murray is the front-runner in this competition, and the Vikings could be ready to name the winner sooner rather than later. Regardless of the timing on the quarterback decision, all signs point to Murray taking snaps under center in Week 1.

Even though it feels like a foregone conclusion that Murray will eventually emerge as the starter, the timing matters, too. If he is announced as the starter within the first week of camp, that will signal he has picked up the offense and the coaching staff is comfortable moving forward with him.

However, if the competition drags on through the end of the preseason, questions will loom about Murray's viability in O'Connell's offense. Then, fans will be left wondering how much the quarterback's play will improve in 2026.
