Vikings HC discusses naming a starting QB for the Vikings

All offseason, the hottest debate in the NFL was who was going to be named the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota signed Kyler Murray to be camp competition for J.J. McCarthy, and on Wednesday, Kevin O'Connell announced that Murray would be the starter heading into their week one matchup against Green Bay.

When speaking to the media, O'Connell broke down what went into his decision to name Murray as Minnesota's starting quarterback:

"It’s just the appropriate time now to allow our team and everybody clarity for exactly the direction we’re moving going forward," O'Connell said.

"There’s moments in time where you know there’s comfort from Kyler in the scheme. He had some really high completion days where he was able to show some really, really good understanding of just putting the ball in play, playing with great timing, rhythm," O'Connell said. "You guys have seen him be explosive when there’s opportunities there, but you’ve also seen him check the ball down and put the ball in play and get us from a first-and-10 to a second-and-3. And then, as you continued to look at the body of work through those 10 days, what jumped out is what could be."

While many believed that Murray would eventually win the job, it is a bit surprising to see him named starter before a preseason game has been played. It is worth noting that since being named starter, Murray has reportedly looked a lot more relaxed and is playing well in camp. Both Murray and McCarthy are expected to play Saturday versus the Giants.
