The Minnesota Vikings pulled out a tight victory in their preseason opener on Saturday afternoon, taking down the New York Giants in a 13-10 final at MetLife Stadium.
And the big swing factor in this game was the turnover battle, because despite both teams finishing with relatively similar offensive output, the Vikings forced two turnovers and didn’t turn the ball over once on their side. Minnesota finished with 238 total yards compared to 201 for New York, but those extra possessions ultimately made the difference.
The biggest positive for Minnesota was Myles Price, who finished with four catches for 51 yards and the only touchdown of the game for the Vikings. He hauled in a one-handed catch from Carson Wentz from the 1-yard line late in the third quarter, and that effectively acted as the game-winner.
Wentz was solid for the Vikings under center, finishing 9-of-14 for 81 yards, that single touchdown and no interceptions.
And after winning the starting job earlier this week, Kyler Murray finished 2-of-3 for 10 yards and led the opening drive to a field goal. He didn’t get a ton of action, but did his job in his first game as Minnesota’s QB1.
J.J. McCarthy also didn’t get that much opportunity to show too much, finishing 4-of-7 for 34 yards while being sacked once. Neither Murray nor McCarthy turned the ball over, and for both quarterbacks this was really more about starting to ease into the season than putting together a huge performance.
Defensively, Minnesota generated four sacks and two interceptions. Dallas Turner and Jay Ward were two of the big playmakers on that end, while Jacob Roberts intercepted Brandon Allen in the third quarter to generate a short-field situation that ultimately led to Minnesota’s touchdown. Jacob Thomas added another interception early in the fourth quarter.
Really the only major negative for the Vikings was the injury to Jamal Adams. In his Minnesota debut, Adams suffered a non-contact right knee injury during the second quarter and had to be carted to the locker room. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said afterward that the initial assessment was “not good,” although the full extent of the injury has yet to be announced.
Overall, Minnesota comes away with a win, several encouraging individual performances and plenty to go back to practice next week and continue improving upon as the regular season gets closer. Thus far, things are trending up for the Vikings.
