LAUREL — Runaway Locomotives.

The Bigfork Vikings had to deal with a hamstring injury to standout sprinter Robert Merchant on Saturday at the State A track and field meet, but it would have been tough to catch host Laurel regardless: Decker Purkett and Gabriel Glassing went 1-2 in both hurdles races to send the Locomotives on their way to 96 points.

Bigfork held on to second, scoring 50. Corvallis, getting a third-place finish from discus thrower Ayden Spencer in the day’s final event, was third with 49.

Polson and Frenchtown (24) tied for 10th; Columbia Falls had 16 points and Whitefish 10.

With Macy Brandon completing a sprint sweep — and setting the Class A record in the 100 — Havre won the girls title with 62 points. Corvallis had 58 points, followed by Stevensville (53) and Hamilton (52). Whitefish had 39 points.

The Vikings’ highlight Saturday came in the triple jump, where Tamret Savik marked a personal record of 48 feet, 4.75 inches, crushing the Class A record. The old record was 47-0.5, set by Miles City’s Mike Lamphear in 1978.

Laurel’s Glassing finished second in the triple, marking 46-9.25.

The boys 1,600 dual between Polson’s David DiGiallonardo and Billings Central’s Grey Piseno went the way of Finn Schretenthaler of Livingston, who set the Class A record at 4:15.12. Hardin’s Ben Bird was second in 4:15.84. Then came DiGiallonardo (4:17.59) and Piseno (4:17.63). Simon Douglas of Whitefish had set the record of 4:16.80 last May.

Laurel set the Class A record in the short relay, clocking 42.18. That was .05 faster than Bigfork — Tayden West, Quinn Kerr, Austin Savik and Merchant — ran while setting the record in Friday’s trials. Austin Savik was third in the 300 hurdles as well.

Tamret Savik won the high jump (at a PR of 6-6) and was second in the long jump Friday; Merchant won the 400 in a Class A record 47.89, shading the 48.10 Miles City’s Jeff Muri ran at the “English distance,” 440 meters, in 1976.

Merchant was hurt during the 400-meter relay finals Saturday morning. That and bad weather might have cast a pall, but the Vikings battled.

“Losing Robert was hard,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. “And they came through and just competed. They went with what they had and persevered and did awesome. I told them were my champions, as far as I’m concerned.”

Frenchtown’s Henry Griffin completed his shot-discus sweep, throwing 176-8 in the latter.

On the girls side, Billings Central’s Addison Kegel set her third Class A record while completing her distance sweep: The freshman ran the 1,600 in 4:49.30, shattering the 9-year-old record of 4:57.07 by Belgrade’s Pipi Eitel. Polson’s Morgan Delaney also came in under the record, taking second at 4:56.24.

Polson’s girls had 22 points, good for 10th.

Columbia Falls and Libby scored 12 points each, tying for 15th. Libby’s Capri Farmer was third in the 1,600 (5:00.59).

Another record went to Stevensville’s Reagan Johnstone, who won the 100 hurdles in 14.42 seconds, just ahead of Whitefish’s Ginger Berland (14.45). Both ran under the 14.47 posted by Corvallis Paige Squire in 2011.

Johnstone also won the 300s in 43.36, with Berland second at 44.10. Both are sophomores.

Havre’s Brandon won the 100 meters in 11.99 seconds; she and Corvallis senior Jillian Huls (12.18) both broke the existing A mark of 12.24 by Whitefish’s Brooke Zetooney in 2023. Brandon won the 200 in 24.90 (Huls was second at 25.01) to go with Friday’s 400 win (56.86). She also ran on the Blue Ponies’ record-setting short relay (47.77). Whitefish had the record (47.90) for two years.
