The Minnesota Vikings made one of the NFL’s most aggressive quarterback moves, and the early reviews are already reflecting the upside of pairing Kyler Murray with Kevin O’Connell. CBS Sports ranked the NFL’s 12 new coach-quarterback tandems, and Minnesota landed at No. 3 with Murray and O’Connell. The ranking placed the Vikings among the league’s most intriguing offensive situations after a major shift from J.J. McCarthy to Murray.

“Murray is a massive upgrade over what the Vikings had with J.J. McCarthy,” CBS Sports wrote. “O’Connell had previously shown that, regardless of who the Vikings had under center, he got quality quarterback play out of them. Murray has the skill set to do everything the Vikings want, while also bringing to the table qualities that haven’t been there with the previous options Minnesota used, thanks to his ability as a scrambler and occasional designed runner.”

The ranking reflects the belief that O'Connell's quarterback-friendly system could unlock a more dynamic version of Minnesota's offense. O'Connell has already built a reputation for creating efficient passing-game structure, and Murray gives him a different type of quarterback than the Vikings have had in recent seasons.

Murray's arm talent, mobility, and ability to extend plays should fit well with a Vikings offense built around explosive skill-position talent. His presence also adds another layer to the run game because defenses must account for his scrambling ability and occasional designed runs.

For Minnesota, the move raises expectations. Murray is not being viewed as a developmental option or bridge quarterback. He arrives as a proven starter whose athletic profile gives the Vikings a chance to expand their offensive options.

The ranking also puts pressure on the partnership to produce quickly. If O'Connell can maximize Murray the way CBS Sports projects, Minnesota could have one of the NFL's most dangerous new quarterback-coach pairings entering the 2026 season.
