Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell drops interesting update on Kyler Murray’s progress appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Minnesota Vikings are focused on upgrading at the QB spot this season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell is holding an open competition in training camp between newcomer Kyler Murray and third-year holdover J.J. McCarthy to determine this season’s starter
While most observers expect Murray to win the job because of his past experience with the Arizona Cardinals and McCarthy’s issues last year with injuries and inconsistency, there have been no public declarations about which quarterback is leading the competition at this point in training camp.
However, O’Connell gave Murray some praise for his understanding of the offense as the team prepares for its first preseason game Saturday against the New York Giants. “I think mentally he’s definitely probably ahead of where I thought,” O’Connell said, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com.

However, he added that there have been changes to the offense and there are aspects that are new to both Murray and McCarthy. It seems quite clear that O’Connell is not planning to provide any updates on which quarterback is truly leading the competition until later in the summer.
The likelihood is that the Vikings will play two of their three preseason games and then O’Connell will make the decision prior to the third and final game.
O’Connell has said that he has a target date in mind for making the decision, but he has not revealed the date. However, since nearly all teams rest their starters in the final preseason game, it seems quite likely that he will make that decision and announce with at least 2-3 weeks to go before the season kicks off Sept. 13 with a home game against the Green Bay Packers.
