Dustin Poirier exhibited threatening behavior during his arrest for public intoxication this past Sunday.
In a video from the Atlanta Police Department obtained by TMZ Sports, Poirier is seen being argumentative and threatening to fight a police officer before being arrested.
The retired UFC veteran initially became agitated after he was pulled off a plane at the Atlanta airport. An officer wearing a body cam responded to the scene after Poirier was hostile toward gate agents.
The officer recognizes Poirier, which only serves to agitate the Louisiana native even further. That’s when Poirier removes his backpack, and threatens to fight the officer.
“I’ll fight you right now,” Poirier says. “I’ll go with you right now. Let’s go. Yeah, tell ‘em. Tell ‘em to come on, because it’s going to be bad. What’s up? You want to fight?”
The officer then calls for backup while apparently pulling out a taser.
“You gonna tase me?” Poirier said. “You gonna tase me, dog? I’m gonna bang you up.”
Eventually, Poirier allows himself to be handcuffed when other police officers arrive upon the scene. Before he is escorted away, Poirier offers a fist bump to the initial officer with whom he had the confrontation.
“Hey, pound it,” Poirier said. “You did a great job. You did what you could. “
Poirier was booked into Clayton County Jail for public drunkenness on Sunday and released a few hours later. In Georgia, that offense is a misdemeanor that comes with up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Poirier appeared to briefly address the incident on his Instagram Stories, writing: “Love you all. I’m working on myself.”
While Ben Askren initially shared a video claiming that Poirier was wrestling some of his friends at the airport, it now appears with the new bodycam video that the retired fighter did more to lead to his arrest. However, fellow UFC veteran King Green came to Poirier’s defense.
“You’re telling me on Father’s Day I can’t get drunk?” Green said in a video on social media. “They caught him at 6:30 p.m. not at no motherf—king 2 a.m. or 4 a.m. in the morning. At 6:30 p.m. I can’t get drunk as s—t on Father’s Day? What the f—k?… With all the s—t we go through, let me enjoy my drink and leave me the f—k alone”
Poirier announced his retirement from MMA following a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway in a farewell fight at UFC 318 last July. The 37-year-old Louisiana native enjoyed a decorated career that saw him challenge for lightweight gold on multiple occasions. He earned notable wins over the likes of Conor McGregor (twice), Holloway (twice), Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, Jim Miller, Dan Hooker and Benoit St. Denis, to name a few.
