Victor Wembanyama helped keep the San Antonio Spurs' season alive with a crucial road win Monday in the NBA Finals. It was a painful loss for New York Knicks fans who wanted to see their squad jump out to a likely insurmountable 3-0 series lead.
After struggling against Karl-Anthony Towns to the extent where Charles Barkley described him as "in shock," Wembanyama tallied 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks in Game 3. He quieted an electric Madison Square Garden and instantly earned New York Villain status.
Wemby knows he's not public enemy No. 1 in the eyes of Knicks fans quite yet, however. When asked postgame whether being New York's latest villain is the ultimate compliment, the Frenchman said, "I guess. I'm nowhere near Trae Young level, though."
Young famously clowned the Knicks throughout the Atlanta Hawks' gentleman's sweep of New York in 2021. It was Young's first career playoff series and he looked far from inexperienced. He shushed the New York crowd after hitting a game-winner in the series' opening game, then bowed for Knicks fans after eliminating their team in Game 5.
It was arguably the peak of Young's career. Wemby is aiming for far more, starting with stacking another win in New York on Wednesday.
