The Houston Rockets (via Phoenix) won a random drawing Monday against the Portland Trail Blazers to potentially land a higher draft choice in the NBA's 2025 first-round. An announcement detailing the random-drawing results was made by the league office.
The Rockets own the Suns' 2025 first-round selection via an unprotected swap right, and the Suns and Trail Blazers both finished at 36-46 and tied for the league's ninth-worst record. Thus, a tiebreaker was needed to sort out the eventual placement.
While the 2024-25 regular season ended a week ago, the league office needed to factor in results from last week's play-in tournament for other tiebreakers. Monday was the first business day since the play-in tournament ended late Friday, so that's when the drawings were held.
As things stand, the Rockets and Trail Blazers will split their odds for the May 12 draft lottery, which determines the top four selections. However, in the likely scenario that neither team jumps from the No. 9 or No. 10 odds slot into the top four, Houston would pick ahead of Portland in the first-round order.
Per Tankathon, Houston enters the May 12 lottery with a 17.3% chance of securing one of the top-four selections and a 3.8% probability of jumping to No. 1 overall. The 2025 draft class is headlined by Duke forward Cooper Flagg.
