The NFL may not have been in the cards for Vernon Adams Jr., but an impressive career in the Canadian Football League certainly has been. Long having been one of the top passers in the CFL since joining the league in 2016, the former Oregon Ducks quarterback had the best game of his career on July 2.
Suiting up for the Calgary Stampeders, Adams completed 20 of 25 passes for 405 yards and six touchdowns, tying a franchise record held by four other quarterbacks, most notably Doug Flutie (1994) and Jeff Garcia (1995), both of whom went on to have successful NFL careers. Adams went a step further however, rushing for a touchdown, giving him seven total scores while leading the way for the Stampeders to down the Toronto Argonauts, 58-36.
"One of the better games I've probably ever seen," head coach Dave Dickenson said.
Playing an exciting, explosive brand of football has been the norm for Adams, who threw for over 400 yards seven times in three seasons with the Eastern Washington Eagles before transferring to Oregon for the 2015 season. While leading the Ducks to a 9-4 record, Adams threw for 2,643 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding two scores on the ground.
He parlayed that season into stints with the Montreal Alouettes (2016-2022), BC Lions (2023-2024) and now the Stampede, where he's started the last two seasons. Overall, Adams has amassed 21,564 yards, 128 passing touchdowns and 28 rushing touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the top players in the league.
And at 33 years old, the former Duck isn't done, clearly still playing at a superstar level.
