Vanderbilt baseball has added to its staff with the hire of Travis Jewett as the director of player strategy and personnel, according to a report from Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.
The GM-like role is a new addition to the Commodores' staff. According to a job posting in mid-May, the role's responsibilities include helping to identify and evaluate high school and transfer portal prospects, maintain player projections and determine how to allocate NIL resources.
Jewett was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt from 2013-16 before leaving to be the head coach at Tulane. He was an assistant coach at USC before returning to the Commodores.
General manager-style roles have become more prominent in college sports lately, with Vanderbilt football being one of the early adopters with Clark Lea's hire of Barton Simmons. These roles are less common in college baseball.
While Tim Corbin declined to comment on potential staffing additions after an SEC Tournament loss, this addition was likely seen as necessary after the Commodores missed the NCAA Tournament in 2026. Vanderbilt previously struggled to find impact position players in the transfer portal. After a series of hits on pitchers like Sawyer Hawks and Cody Bowker, the Commodores' transfer pitchers for the 2026 season, Jacob Faulkner and Nate Taylor, both struggled.
"But I love college baseball. I love where college baseball is," Corbin said after the SEC Tournament loss. "I love where this conference is. I just look at it as, OK, we've got some good players coming back, but we need to better ourselves . . . I just look at it and say I'm going to figure this (expletive) out, some way, somehow."
