Utah football went viral recently for showing off a new way to study film. Utes defensive lineman Jamal Wallace was using his techniques, along with a chair set up while projecting plays on the wall. He posted a video on social media, which has since caught the attention of former NFL players.
But there was one minor detail, and the film that was being studied. Utah was using tape from a game featuring Division II school Grand Valley State. Lakers coach Scott Wooster just so happened to notice and started asking questions. How would a Power Four team get tape from a lower division program?
Major programs trade film all the time for scouting reasons. However, GVS or any of the Lakers' opponents won't face Utah this year. So why did this happen?
“How’d they get our tape???,” Woosrer said when the video first went viral on social media. “Still want to know how they got our tape???,” he later responded to a second post of the same video.
For those wondering, the answer is simple. Utah opens the season against Idaho, who recently hired Ian Schumacher as the Vandals' new offensive coordinator. His previous stop was at Grand Valley State. Utah wants to understand how he ran the Lakers' offense over the past two seasons. One smart workaround to use and not underestimate their Week 1 opponent.
At 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, Wallace joined the Utes as a transfer from Tennessee. He played in a total of nine games with seven tackles last season. As of now, Wallace is viewed as a solid contributor and will likely get meaningful reps this season. He'll try to make the best of his final collegaite season.
Utah enters the 2026 college football season looking to make a statement in the Big 12. The Utes are viewed just outside the top two behind BYU and Texas Tech. Not bad for Morgan Scalley's first season in Salt Lake City. This could be a surprising year for the program. If the team can stay healthy down the stretch, the rest of the Big 12 might be faced with a problem.
