SEATTLE — The U.S. men's national team has sent a thank you to the country. And a request.

In a social media post the day after they were eliminated from the World Cup with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16, the USMNT said they carried the support of the fans with them when they played.

"You filled stadiums, you brought the game into your homes, bars, parks and communities across the country," the team wrote in the Tuesday, July 7 post. "Wearing the crest is a privilege, and hearing your voices throughout the tournament is something we will never forget."

Dear America... Thank you for standing with us and for believing in this team. Thank you for believing in the future of soccer in this country.

This is only the second time the United States has hosted the men's World Cup, and U.S. Soccer is counting on it to spark another explosion in interest in the game. While it's too soon to tell what impact the tournament will have in the long term, the country flooded the USMNT bandwagon.

Fox said a record 30 million people watched the loss to Belgium on Monday, July 6. The red-and-white stripes jersey seems to be the uniform of the summer. And "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was suddenly a hit again.

But the USMNT's finish was disappointing. Its round-of-16 exit was the same as it had in its previous three appearances, and it was completely overwhelmed against Belgium.

"We'll learn from this," the team said in the post. "We'll get better to compete with the world's best. And we'll keep doing the work because that's what this team and this country expects of us."

The USMNT also encouraged Americans to stay involved in the game, promising to provide more opportunities to play. That echoes what captain Tim Ream said after the game.

"We knew what kind of impact we would be able to have as long as we played well and the performances were there and we were winning games. Obviously that all comes to a halt now, but I don't think the conversation changes," Ream said.

"I'm sure people will say, 'Oh, it now is going to die down.' But if you look at what we've done, I don't think that the conversation should die down," Ream said. "I think it should be how incredible this journey has been with this group. How can we keep the conversation going? Those boys and girls ... how can we continue to inspire them now that the tournament is over?"

The USMNT closed its thank you note by quoting "Country Roads," which had become the team's anthem.

"Thank you for standing with us and for believing in this team. Thank you for believing in the future of soccer in this country," the note said. "Country roads, take us home. We'll see you there."
