Tim Ream has made history at the 2026 World Cup.
When the United States captain took the field on Friday, June 12 against Paraguay, Ream became the oldest American man to play in a World Cup at 38 years and 250 days old.
Ream surpassed the record previously held by defender Fernando Clavijo, who was 38 years and 162 days old when he played for the USMNT in the 1994 World Cup — the last time the tournament was hosted on U.S. soil.
This is the second World Cup for Ream, who started all four U.S. games in Qatar in 2022. The veteran defender had distinguished playing career in England, spending 14 combined seasons with Bolton Wanderers and Fulham.
He played five seasons in the Premier League with the last of four with Fulham finishing in 2024. He now plays in MLS for Charlotte FC.
However, Ream is far from the oldest player competing in this year's World Cup, which features seven players 40 or older. Scotland's 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon and 41-year-old Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo top the list.
Though USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino named Tyler Adams, the captain for the 2022 World Cup, to his roster, the coach selected Ream as his captain for 2026.
"He is a great captain not only on the field, but more importantly off the field. He has the experience and capacity to be the leader that we want," Pochettino said.
