Super Bowl week is officially upon us! On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks will take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
While Seattle has just one Super Bowl win to its name, New England has six, tied for the most of any NFL franchise. All six of those titles came in the 2000s and 2010s under legendary head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.
Although Belichick and Brady were the faces of the dynasty, two legendary USC linebackers also played notable roles in it. One of those was Willie McGinest. A star linebacker at USC, the Patriots selected McGinest with the fourth overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft—making him the team’s first draft pick of Robert Kraft’s tenure owning the team.
McGinest played for the Patriots from 1994-2005. He was one of the team’s defensive cornerstones during the early years of the dynasty, helping them win the franchise’s three Super Bowls.
In addition, while primarily known for his time with the San Diego Chargers, the late Junior Seau also played for the Patriots at the end of his career from 2006-2009. In 2007, at age 37, he helped the team to a historic 16-0 regular season, before they were ultimately upset by the New York Giants in one of the most shocking Super Bowl results of all time.
Seau and McGinest are widely regarded as the founders of the 55 Club—the most legendary number in USC football history. Both also went on to wear the No. 55 during their respective tenures in New England.
