USC baseball is one win away from returning to the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska for the first time since 2001.
After upsetting No. 11 national seed Texas A&M in back-to-back games in the College Station Regional, USC advance to its first super regional since 2005. Facing No. 4 national seed North Carolina on the road in the super regional created a difficult path to Omaha for the USC, but once again, the Trojans have overcome the odds.
A grand slam by junior infielder Dean Carpentier gave USC a one-run lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Trojans had trailed the Tar Heels for the entire game up until that point.
“I knew he was a slider guy,” Carpentier said of North Carolina reliever Walker McDuffie on the ESPN2 broadcast. “That first one kind of was out over the plate, and I knew he was coming back to it, and I wanted to put a good swing on a good pitch, and it found a way out of the yard.”
USC went on to add three more runs to the score in the top of the seventh inning to defeat North Carolina 9-5 in the super regional opener.

Now, USC and North Carolina will go head-to-head in the second game of the series at Boshamer Stadium on Saturday.
If the Trojans win Saturday, the series is over and USC will secure a berth to the MCWS. If the Tar Heels come back to defeat the Trojans, a third game will be played on Sunday to determine the super regional champion. The winner of that game will advance to the MCWS.
The MCWS begins Friday.
Despite not having appeared in the MCWS since 2001, USC still holds the record for most NCAA titles with 12 national championships in program history. The Trojans’ last national championship was won in 1998.
