UNC baseball is now one loss away from becoming the third top-eight seed in the NCAA tournament to be eliminated before the College World Series in Omaha.
The Tar Heels dropped Game 1 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional on Friday afternoon to USC, squandering a 5-1 lead after allowing five runs in the sixth inning. The Trojans' offensive onslaught was headlined by a grand slam from Dean Carpentier, which gave his team a 6-5 lead.
USC added three more runs in the seventh as they ultimately pulled away to win 9-5, putting the No. 5 national seed Tar Heels on the verge of elimination.
The Trojans have won 12 national championships, most recently in 1998, but they haven't made it to Omaha since 2001. Now, they're one win on Saturday in Chapel Hill away from ending that drought and punching their ticket to the College World Series.
