After Friday’s brutal NCAA Tournament loss to Texas State, the USC baseball team suddenly found itself in a difficult position. Entering the losers bracket right away, the Trojans would need to win four games in three days in order to win the regional and advance in the tournament.
Well, step one, at least, is complete. USC absolutely dominated Lamar Saturday, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and never looking back in a 19-6 thrashing.
All nine members of USC’s starting lineup recorded at least one hit. However, the surprising star of the day was freshman outfielder Walter Urbon. Despite not playing a ton during the regular season, Urbon found his way into the lineup for the NCAA Tournament and delivered in a big way. In six plate appearances against Lamar, Urbon recorded five hits—including a grand slam—and a sacrifice fly. He was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
The 19 runs were the most scored by the Trojans in a postseason game this century. The last time that they scored more came in the 1998 College World Series Finals, when USC defeated Arizona State in a 21-14 shootout to win its 12th national championship.
With the victory, USC advances to a rematch with Texas State Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time/3:00 p.m. Central time. If the Trojans win that one, they would play a second game Sunday evening against host Texas A&M. A loss, however, would end USC’s season.
