This was certainly the case for the South American powerhouse, Uruguay, which revealed its squad list for the upcoming summer spectacle, and it contains the usual star players such as Federico Valverde, Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, and Manuel Ugarte, amongst others.

But within Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for the World Cup, there was one shocking omission: Luis Suarez.

This will be Suarez’s first missed World Cup camp since the start of his career, having partaken in Uruguay’s squad for the previous four iterations of the fixture. Within his 143 appearances for his national team, Suarez has netted the most goals of all-time for La Celeste, with the back of the net bulging 69 times over the course of his career.

Suarez’s last major competition with his national team came in the 2024 Copa America, in which he would score a single goal across four matches. In his 16 World Cup appearances, the Uruguayan striker has netted seven goals and two assists, proving to be a pivotal part of the squad’s setup.

This season hasn't seen Suarez drop a bit of consistency for Inter Miami, as he'd scored six goals while netting one assist throughout 12 games on the pitch in the MLS.

La Celeste's World Cup campaign is slated to begin on June 15, when they're slated to take on Saudi Arabia, with their other opponents in Group H being Cape Verde and Spain.
