Jun. 25—CHAMPAIGN — Permanent seatbacks are coming to Illinois Field.

A grand total of 1,500 of them.

These are among a slew of other enhancements to the venue the Illinois baseball team has called home since 1988.

Illinois announced on Thursday a $5 million gift by an anonymous donor will pay for renovations and upgrades to the facility.

Work is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2027.

The renovation plans are set to include new and additional seating down the first and third baselines, permanent seatbacks and new and expanded dugouts.

"We have tremendous gratitude for the donor who has supported the renovation of Illinois Field," Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said in a statement. "Their generosity will have a lasting impact on the Illinois baseball program. We have made meaningful strides in our facilities directly related to student-athlete development, and now we are thrilled to continue the improvement for our fan experience."

Veteran Illinois baseball coach Dan Hartleb has long been an advocate for wanting upgrades to happen at Illinois Field, where metal bleachers stretch from the third-base dugout down to the first-base dugout for fans to sit in the venue that can hold up to 5,000 people.

Renovations to Illinois Field since it opened almost 40 years ago include lights being added in 1999, an artificial turf playing surface first installed in 2008 and upgraded in 2020, a video board that was added in right-center field in 2015 and a renovated player clubhouse, but not much for the fan experience. The Illini baseball program opened a new indoor Atkints Baseball Training Center ahead of the 2023 season that sits next to Illinois Field.

"I am extremely excited about the upgrades to Illinois Field," said Hartleb, the Illini coach since 2006 who is the program's all-time wins leader with 625 victories. "The renovations will significantly improve the fan and player experiences while also enhancing home crowd comfort. We have been extremely blessed to have a donor step up to help us to continue to advance Illinois baseball."

Illinois Field has also hosted the last two IHSA baseball state tournaments for Class 1A and 2A and is under contract to do so through 2030.
