We are now a few days into free agency, so let's take an updated look at the Jacksonville Jaguars current defensive depth chart.
While it's been a relatively quiet start to free agency for the Jaguars, being able to retain Montaric Brown and Dennis Gardeck does very much impact the outlook of those two position groups.
So let's go position-by-position, highlighting where things stand for Jacksonville as we enter the fourth day of NFL free agency.
Depth at both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions is greatly needed. But in addition to simply needing more players, more pass rush production is needed from the tackle position, and the same could be said for the defensive end depth behind Hines-Allen and Walker.
With Devin Lloyd now in Carolina, the starting job next to Oluokun is up for grabs. The urgency with which James Gladstone addresses linebacker moving forward will likely depend on how confident he is in Miller, Kiser or another player to step into a larger role.
Adding Brown back into the mix greatly reduced the Jaguars' need to address the cornerback position. He and Hunter will start on the outside, Lewis will be at the nickel, while Jones provides experienced depth. I would guess we still see Gladstone add to this position in the draft, but no longer does doing so right away feel like a must.
The Jaguars lost Andrew Wingard to the Cardinals, but Antonio Johnson can step into that full-time starting role with Eric Murray. We saw a lot of three-safety looks from Anthony Campanile last season, and the Jaguars have options to fill that role between 2025 draft picks Rayuan Lane and Caleb Ransaw. Similarly to linebacker, how urgently Gladstone addresses safety will come down to his confidence in Lane and Ransaw being able to provide steady depth at this position.
