VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A thick fog enveloped this cosmopolitan western Canadian city on Sunday. The Coyotes, who have been skating in a fog for the past couple of weeks, finally broke through the murk and found some rays of hope.
Though they were completely dominated at times and once again took a needless glutton of penalties, the Coyotes somehow managed to play just good enough to salvage a 3-3 tie with the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place.
Center Krys Kolanos, a healthy scratch for the first time in his career Saturday in San Jose, forced overtime with a nice wraparound goal on Dan Cloutier with 1:14 left to play in the third period. It came just as goalie Sean Burke had stepped off the ice for a sixth attacker.
Phoenix (3-3-2) had three decent chances to beat Cloutier in overtime, but the Canucks goalie held his ground as Vancouver improved to 2-0-2 in its past four games.
Markus Naslund scored the go-ahead goal for Vancouver at 8:51 of the third, but it wouldn't hold up for game winner.
The Coyotes fell behind 2-0 after goals by Trevor Linden and Ed Jovanovski and, despite another rash of penalties, rallied to tie it with a supercharged second period.
Shane Doan and Ladislav Nagy dominated, creating turnovers and numerous scoring chances when the Coyotes weren't trying to kill off eight Vancouver power plays through the first two periods alone. They teamed up during a four-on-four situation, with Doan getting his fourth goal at 8:42, and then forced a turnover to feed Radoslav Suchy for a score less than 90 seconds later.
All the penalties aside, the Coyotes suddenly didn't look like a team that had been struggling or coming off another overtime game in San Jose the previous night. They had so much energy, in fact, they almost got involved in what could have been a nasty postgame brawl.
Tempers flared after David Tanabe was hit in the helmet by a puck after the final whistle, and though a few shoves were thrown, both teams left the ice peacefully.
