Union Berlin have extended the contract with coach Steffen Baumgart, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Wednesday.

The team didn't disclose the length of the new deal.

"Steffen took over the team during a difficult phase and managed to give it stability and clarity," said Union's director of men's professional football, Horst Heldt.

"The development over the past few months shows that we are on the right track."

Baumgart took over as head coach of the men's first team just over a year ago. This season, Union have won six of their 16 league games so far and are ninth in the standings ahead of their trip to Augsburg on Thursday.

"Union stand for cohesion and a consistent attitude on the pitch, which I greatly appreciate. We have created a stable foundation on which we want to continue to build and be successful," Baumgart said.
