Jul. 8—GRAND FORKS — UND's campus was filled this week with incoming students as orientation took place for new students.

On the artificial turf of the Pollard Center, an even younger generation was receiving an introduction to UND.

On Tuesday, Fighting Hawks football players and Sanford Health employees put on a Greater Grand Forks Legacy Football Camp for approximately 100 boys and girls of the ages kindergarten to eighth grade.

The camp was $50 to attend. Each session started with a 20-minute warmup led by Sanford Sports training staff. Athletes then went through different skill stations with UND players including quarterback Jerry Kaminski and wide receiver Deng Deng.

Kaminski and Deng teamed together to put on a camp the following day in Devils Lake, which was expecting more than 200 campers.

"We just want to be organized and make sure we have a bunch of different drills," said UND linebackers coach Ben Watkins, who organizes UND's camps (two prospect camps, high school team camp and middle school/youth three-day team camp). "The kids can do athletic things, compete and be introduced to some football skills."

Watkins has been helping with youth camps dating back to 2022 when he was at Fresno State.

"Our players have done a good job coaching the kids, and it's a lot of the same drills our guys do," Watkins said. "It's also just good to give back to the community."
