Five-star point guard Dylan Mingo is no longer committed to North Carolina, as the New York City standout and the Tar Heels have decided to part ways. Andrew Jones of TarHeel247 first reported the news.
Mingo, a consensus top-10 prospect in his class out of Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.), committed to UNC on Feb. 17 but never signed a national letter of intent. The move comes less than a month after former head coach Hubert Davis was fired on March 24 and replaced by former NBA championship-winning coach Michael Malone. Mingo met with Malone and members of the new staff over the weekend.
The new staff, which recently landed Virginia Tech wing Neoklis Avdalas, hosted Utah transfer guard Terrence Brown on an on-campus visit Monday and visited top 10 transfer portal target Juke Harris of Wake Forest in his hometown of Salisbury, opted to move in a different direction with its backcourt, leading to the split with Mingo.
Mingo played in 12 games last spring for the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaging 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals. He shot 76% from the free-throw line, 48.1% on two-point attempts and 25.6% from 3-point range.
He picked the Tar Heels over finalists Baylor, Penn State and Washington, and also held offers from Alabama, Cincinnati, Florida State, Illinois, Louisville, Missouri, N.C. State, Ole Miss, Texas and UConn.
North Carolina’s 2026 recruiting haul still includes four-star forward and McDonald’s All American Maximo Adams, along with three-star guard Malloy Smith. Adams said Saturday he intends to honor his pledge to the Tar Heels.
