Cody Garbrandt returned to the win column after a wild affair with Xiao Long.
Garbrandt (15-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC) was en route to losing a decision before multiple low blows by Long (27-11 MMA, 1-3 UFC) resulted in two point deductions. The final score read (28-27, 28-27, 28-27) in favor of Garbrandt. The bantamweight bout was part of the UFC 326 prelims at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.Garbrandt looked light on his feet early, but was caught with a hard left head kick that got his attention. Long started to stalk Garbrandt by throwing various kicks. Long went for a big right hand, but Garbrandt ducked under and clinched. Garbrandt clipped Long with a clean elbow off the break, which Long acknowledged. Long then caught Garbrandt dipping and landed another head kick. Garbrandt level changed and landed a double-leg takedown, but Long popped back up.Round 2 started as a feeling out process, with the action reducing significantly. Long continued mixing things up with leg kicks and head kicks. Garbrandt shot for a takedown, but Long was wise to it and broke free. Gabrandt shot again, but was shucked off. Long grazed Garbrandt with a flying knee, and continued attacking with the low kicks. An accidental headbutt sent Long to the mat, but Long waived the action on as the round came to a close.
Round 3 kicked off with an accidental low blow by Long which caused a momentary break in the action. A few seconds later, Long struck him with another accidental groin shot which had Garbrandt hurling on the ground. Garbrandt opted to continue, and referee Herb Dean deducted a point off Long. Garbrandt charged at Long aggressively and clinched. Long landed yet another low blow which caused a second point deduction. Long landed a late takedown and secured full mount with just seconds remaining in the fight, but it was too little too late.
With the win, Garbrandt snapped a two-fight losing skid. The former UFC bantamweight champion is now 3-2 in his past five fights.
