The FIFA World Cup could look drastically different in future years if UEFA’s threat comes to fruition following Gianni Infantino’s latest investment plans.
The 2026 World Cup presented a major win for FIFA after record attendance and viewership in North America. However, Infantino isn’t winning over fans or national teams with his plans to sell ownership in the tournament.

The FIFA president is reportedly eyeing a World Cup sale that would rake in huge sums of money for the organization. Meanwhile, it would also give private investment firms the chance to engage in important World Cup decisions.
The Times’ Martyn Ziegler reveals all 55 UEFA associations are prepared to withdraw from the World Cup if Infantino’s plans go through. This would mark a completely unprecedented turn for the biggest global soccer competition.
“UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions,” per Ziegler’s reporting.

This week, Infantino delivered an ultimatum to FIFA nations for the national teams to accept the $20 billion proposal. His claims reportedly suggest that each country would stand to lose $40 million each if they don’t oblige.
The Associated Press reveals that Infantino’s deadline to all FIFA countries comes in September. There are 211 active federations that fall under FIFA’s umbrella.
It’s evident that Infantino’s growing relationship with U.S. president Donald Trump has rubbed many fans the wrong way.
The FIFA leader’s plan is being backed by Thrive Capital founder Joshua Kushner. He is the brother of Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.

“It is my duty and responsibility as FIFA president to present such game-changing opportunities to you, our members,” Infantino wrote in a letter to member countries (obtained by AP).
