FORT WORTH, TX ― The UConn Huskies (37-0) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (25-10) will meet for the 56th time in the last 30 years in the Elite Eight at the Women's NCAA Tournament on March 29.
UConn leads the series 39-16 in the decades-long rivalry. The Huskies and Irish have played eight times in the NCAA Tournament, always in the semifinals or finals.
"I've been blessed to be a part of this rivalry and been a part of going against one of the best programs in the history of the game, so I've learned a lot," Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey said. "Regardless of the road, you know, we're excited to play, and I'm excited to, again, go against the best team in the country."
The last time UConn and Notre Dame played was on January 19, an 85-47 Huskies victory. The short-handed Fighting Irish were without glue player KK Bransford, sidelined by an injury.
Notre Dame has Bransford back in the fold and is red hot ahead of Sunday's head-to-head with the Huskies. The Fighting Irish have a 6-1 record in March, including an upset NCAA Tournament win over No. 2 seed Vanderbilt. Notre Dame cruised behind a 30-point triple-double from guard Hannah Hidalgo.
"(Hidalgo's) just a unique player that comes along once in a lifetime, and she has the ability to disrupt and cause chaos like nobody I've ever seen. I think her team obviously feeds off of that," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said."We played them in January, and they were ― you know, they weren't at full strength, and they've had time to be together. ... Everybody on their team knows what their role is. They know what they do and do it well, and everybody kind of plays together really well. I mean, there's a reason why they're playing (Sunday)."
The winner of Sunday's Elite Eight matchup will move on to the Final Four in Phoenix at Mortgage Matchup Center. Final Four semifinals are Friday, April 3, with the national title game on Sunday, April 5.
The UConn Huskies will play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Elite Eight round of the 2026 Women's NCAA Tournament at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 29, at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
