No. 2 seed UConn had a little more trouble than expected with No. 15 Furman on Friday. But not because of anything Tarris Reed Jr. did.
The Huskies’ senior big man posted the most outrageous stat line of the tournament so far, finishing with 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting and 27 rebounds (11 on offense). He singlehandedly out-rebounded Furman, which had 23 boards as a team.
The Paladins just didn’t have an answer for him. Considering UConn was 32-of-65 from the field, his 11 offensive rebounds represent one third of his team’s misses.
To find the last 30-25 game in the NCAA tournament, you have to go all the way back to Houston’s Elvin Hayes in 1968. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer was also the last player to post 27 rebounds in a single March Madness game.
Reed blew away his career high for both points and rebounds in the same game. Before Friday, his previous high marks were in the same game on March 1, 2025, when he posted 24 points and 18 rebounds in a Big East tournament win over Providence.
That was the good for UConn. The bad was a game in which they repeatedly failed to put Furman away, and led by only five points with five-and-a-half minutes left. A late 7-0 run protected the Huskies from an embarrassing upset, and ensured the best day for betting favorites in more than three decades.
