There were no surprises at the top of the 2026 MLB Draft, with the Chicago White Sox choosing UCLA Bruins shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Cholowsky will be the first of many Bruins selected in this year’s draft.

Cholowsky had been viewed as the No. 1 pick for much of the past year but as the draft inched closer and closer, prep shortstop Grady Emerson saw his stock rise as a potential option for the White Sox at the top of the draft.

Chicago ultimately decided on the proven Cholowsky, who excelled in two seasons of Big Ten Conference play after a terrific freshman season with the Bruins in the Pac-12. Cholowsky becomes UCLA’s first No. 1 overall pick since Gerrit Cole in 2011, joining Cole and Chris Chambliss as the third Bruin ever taken first overall.

We’ve seen players drafted as shortstops but moved to other positions many times before but Cholowsky has the skillset to stick at shortstop. The White Sox are getting a great season out of 24-year old shortstop Colson Montgomery, but Cholowsky could eventually slide Montgomery over to third base, where he’s played before.

Chicago’s top prospect is another shortstop. Caleb Bonemar is another infielder with experience at third base and shortstop but for a rising White Sox team, this is a good problem to have.

For his UCLA career, Cholowsky batted .329 with 52 home runs and 167 runs batted in over 178 career games with the Bruins. Cholowsky also helped lead UCLA to a ton of team success, even if it ended with an early exit in this year’s NCAA tournament.
