Going into the NCAA tournament, UCLA Bruins freshman forward Sienna Betts was going to be an X-Factor for the Bruins one way or in another. The younger Betts sister didn’t wait long to make an impact, notching a double-double in the first round on Saturday.

Betts scored 10 points on 5-12 shooting with 12 rebounds and a steal in her first-ever NCAA tournament game. Things will get tougher from here, with No. 16 seed California Baptist not having the size needed to keep Betts off of the glass.

Even though it was a great tournament debut for UCLA’s top-ranked freshman, her older sister, Lauren Betts still had some critiques. Betts attempted to compliment her sister but she couldn’t control her laughter.

“I’m really happy for her,” Betts said while laughing. “She had a moment today in the game where she literally just kept missing and getting her own rebound, missing and getting her own rebound. I was like ‘Sienna, just make the shot,’ and she’s like laughing in the middle of the game. She’s not serious.”

Even though Sienna Betts is still in her first year at UCLA, she’s quickly proven that she’s a character. The light-hearted energy is some nice duality for the Bruins team, who has had mammoth expectations placed on them this season.

After poking fun at her younger sister, Lauren Betts spoke on Sienna’s improved defense during Saturday’s game.

“Besides her scoring, I thought her defense was a lot better today. I know that’s something that she wanted to get better in,” Lauren Betts said. “She was just really proud of her (defensive) slides. She didn’t say anything about her points but she was like ‘I’m just so glad I can guard them.’”
