UCLA baseball coach John Savage was named the 2026 Skip Bertman Coach of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) on Saturday.
Named after former LSU head coach and National College Baseball Hall of Famer Skip Bertman, this award honors the nation’s top collegiate baseball coach of the year. Savage has also been named the 2026 Big Ten Coach of the Year and the 2013 National Coach of the Year by four different outlets.
“I am truly honored to receive this award. Having Skip Bertman’s name on the trophy says everything,” Savage said, per UCLA Athletics. “He’s the legend of legends in this game. As a young coach out West, I always admired and looked up to Skip.”

UCLA had one of its best seasons in program history in 2026. The Bruins were ranked as the nation’s top team for the entire season and won both the Big Ten regular season title and Big Ten Tournament title.
The Bruins set a Big Ten conference record with 28 wins and swept Purdue, No. 25 USC and No. 13 Oregon in the Big Ten Tournament. UCLA clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted the NCAA Regional for the second consecutive season at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA ultimately fell to Saint Mary’s in regionals, losing to the Gaels in the regional opener and then again in a 10-inning elimination game on May 31.
Savage holds a 776-489-2 career record at UCLA and is the third-longest-tenured head coach in program history. This season, he coached multiple top prospects for the 2026 MLB Draft, including the consensus No. 1 overall prospect and Big Ten Player of the Year, Roch Cholowsky.
